Welcome to Angouleme
Angouleme is situated one and a half hours drive north-east of Bordeaux (50 mins by train). It is the capital of the Charente department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France.
Our French teacher lives in Soyaux which is part of Angouleme’s urban area (10 mins to the city centre). Angouleme has a rich history with a prosperous period starting at the end of the Roman Empire.
Angouleme town centre is easy to discover on foot. It beautifully blends medieval buildings with those from the 18th and 19th centuries. An era when the city’s paper industry brought great wealth.
The capital of the Charente department is classified as a City of Art and History. And today is most famous for its International Comics Festival in the month of January. It is the second largest comics festival in Europe and the third biggest in the world with over 200 000 visitors each year.
Angouleme is also home to the well-known Francophone Film Festival. It attracts not less than 40 000 visitors each year in August.
Visiting Angouleme will allow you to come across lots of interesting buildings. You’ll see lots of churches, chapels, grand townhouses, and a good number of shops and cafes in the open squares and pedestrian streets.
