Palencia is the capital city of the Province of Palencia which is situated in the autonomous region of Castile and León.
This charming and ancient city has a population of approximately 80,000.
It offers its visitors a substantial heritage including an impressive gothic cathedral, various Roman, medieval as well as 18th, 19th and early 20th century monuments.
At about 10 minutes’ drive south of the city, you may visit the oldest church in Spain which is situated in the village of Baños de Cerrato. This beautiful 7th century basilica was built by the Visigoth and dedicated to Saint John.
The city offers its inhabitants a great urban quality of life with an impressive number of parks. In fact, the size of its green areas per inhabitant is the highest in Spain and one of the highest in the European Union. And Palencia won the prize of the most sustainable city in Spain in 2010.
